4-Mode Drive System

What’s the Benefit?

This system gives drivers a COMFORT mode for relaxed street driving, a SPORT mode for sharpened response and heightened enjoyment, +R mode, which unleashes the beast on track day, and INDIVIDUAL mode that allows drivers to create custom combinations of settings from the first three modes.

The Feature:

Drivers can select their desired mode with the toggle switch near the shift lever, depending upon the job at hand; a readout in the Driver Information Interface (DII) indicates the mode engaged.

  • The 4-mode drive system has an effect on six different functions:
    • When the COMFORT mode is chosen, the dampers soften up to provide a comfortable, compliant ride; EPS lightens up the required effort for easier turning; the throttle response is smoother and less abrupt; the rev-match feature makes for smoother downshifts, the engine sounds more relaxed and the DII base color is white with yellow indicators.
    • In SPORT mode, the dampers are firm for flat cornering; the electric power steering (EPS) provides a direct, linear feel; drive-by-wire throttle response is powerful and direct; the rev-match system makes for instant downshifts; the engine sound is appropriately sporty; and the DII is red with yellow indicators. 
    • Press the +R button when it’s time to let the Civic Type R really show its stuff, and the dampers get much more firm for flat, precision handling; EPS firms up and delivers maximum road feel through the steering wheel; throttle response is most immediate; the rev-match system mirrors the Sport setting; the engine note becomes most aggressive; and the DII goes into the full track mode.
    • When INDIVIDUAL mode is selected, the driver can press and hold the selector toggle to open the customization pane on the 9-inch color touch-screen; the selections—of which there are 486 possible combinations—will be saved.
